Zakynthos Island – The Island of Kareta – Kareta

Zakynthos (Zante) is the more southern Ionian island, and is a complete island from every aspect.
Zakynthos It is one of the most tourist islands in Greece with main characteristic, the beautiful beaches, the all green hills, the innumerable sightseeing’s, the traditional settlements and Zakyntho’s important modern history.

zakynthenian style. In Argasi area, are saved also ruins of medieval castle, and in Keri area the built in stones vaulted grave, is considered to be a sightseeing with important meaning.

One of the most appreciable sightseeing in Zakynthos is found in the villages Volimes.
It is eminent light blue caves, that they are considered to be some of the most beautiful caves in Greece. In the Volimes villages still exists also the Venetian tower, a wonderful building of 14th century.
In the worth seeing places in Zakynthos, we can add the innumerable churches with the impressive belfries and the admirable monasteries – with most important the one of Saint Dionisiou.

According to tradition, Zante (Zakynthos) owes its name in the islands first resident,
Mr Arcadios Zakynthos who reached the island roughly at 1.500 B.C.

During Classic years, the region flourished and founded colonies.
In the beginning of 2nd century B.C. the island was subjugated in Romans.

Later, in the Byzantine years Zakynthos accepted a lot of piratical raids.
From the means of 15th century A.C., Zakynthos passed in the hands of Venetians and then followed the
fate of all other Ionian Islands. Finally, the 18th century Zakynthos discerned in artistic and intellectual
blossoming and elected two from the bigger poets in newer Greece: Andreas Kalvos and Greece’s national
poet Dionysios Solomos.

Restaurants, taverns, bar, cafeterias, club and traditional “bouzoukia” can find a visitor in Zakynthos capital,
while the same variety can also be found in some smaller areas of Zakynthos.
